The Turkish-backed Syrian National Army on Wednesday has thwarted an attempt by the Kurdish YPG militia to infiltrate the Peace-Spring zone in northeastern Syria, Anadolu agency reported.
YPG militants tried to infiltrate into a border village near Tal Abyad town but such a move ended by a clash with the SNA fighters.
No casualties were reported.
Turkish troops and Turkey-backed Syrian National Army last month took control of Tal Abyad and other border towns from Kurdish forces, after US troops – who were protecting the Kurds – pulled out, according to BBC.
Turkey’s military took the Kurdish-held border areas in October 2019 in northern Syria immediately after US forces were withdrawn. Turkey has a longstanding enmity with the Kurds and wants to push back the YPG from its border.
Turkey claims the YPG is a “terrorist” offshoot of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has fought an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984.
